{"id":1750,"date":"2015-11-25T12:50:10","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T12:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emtunc.org\/blog\/?p=1750"},"modified":"2017-02-24T15:16:23","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24T15:16:23","slug":"office-2016-kms-activation-setup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emtunc.org\/blog\/11\/2015\/office-2016-kms-activation-setup\/","title":{"rendered":"Office 2016 KMS Activation Setup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this brief article I will go through the steps to activate your Office 2016 KMS key.<\/p>\n<p>My set-up is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Server 2012 R2 KMS server (I believe you require Server 2008 R2 onwards for this to work but I may be wrong)<\/li>\n<li>Office Professional Plus KMS Key from Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/Licensing\/servicecenter\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">VLSC<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thankfully it&#8217;s pretty straight forward so here goes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First you want to download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=49164\" target=\"_blank\">Office 2016 volume license pack<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; copy it to your server<\/li>\n<li>Now on your server, open the .exe as administrator (at the time of this writing the .exe is named\u00a0office2016volumelicensepack_4285-1000_en-us_x86.exe)<\/li>\n<li>After the installation the\u00a0<em>Volume Activation Tools<\/em> window should open. If it doesn&#8217;t then open it manually (Administrative Tools &#8211;&gt; Volume Activation Tools)<\/li>\n<li>The steps in the volume activation tool may differ for you but for me I did the following:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Key Management Service (KMS) &#8211;&gt;\u00a0Install your KMS host key &#8211;&gt; Commit<\/p>\n<p>Remember, the KMS host key is the one you will find in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/Licensing\/servicecenter\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">volume licensing center<\/a>. The Office 2016 installation (if you downloaded it from the VLSC) will come pre-installed with the KMS key and will, by default, search for your KMS server in DNS.<\/p>\n<p>To confirm that the key is installed, run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">cscript %windir%\/system32\/slmgr.vbs \/dlv all<\/pre>\n<p>you should see something like this:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true  \">Name: Office 16, Office16KMSHostVL_KMS_Host edition\r\nDescription: Office 16, VOLUME_KMS channel<\/pre>\n<p>Also don&#8217;t forget that you will need a minimum of 5 activation attempts (from different machines) before Office 2016 clients will even register as activated.
