{"id":1362,"date":"2015-01-15T15:35:10","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T15:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emtunc.org\/blog\/?p=1362"},"modified":"2015-01-15T15:35:10","modified_gmt":"2015-01-15T15:35:10","slug":"dont-forget-to-check-your-dns-root-server-ips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emtunc.org\/blog\/01\/2015\/dont-forget-to-check-your-dns-root-server-ips\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t Forget to Check your DNS Root Server IPs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are using\u00a0<em>Root Hints<\/em> in your organisation for DNS lookups, you should probably check your root server IPs to ensure they are up to date&#8230; especially if your DNS servers\/DCs are quite old.<\/p>\n<p>The root server FQDNs and IPs are baked in to the DNS manager in Windows\u00a0and although they don&#8217;t change very often (for obvious reasons) it is worth checking that the IPs are up to date; when I checked on my servers there was one entry that needed updating&#8230; not likely to cause big problems but\u00a0definitely worth checking.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the DNS manager<\/li>\n<li>Right click the server and select\u00a0<em>Properties<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<em>Root Hints<\/em> and check every FQDN and IP against <a title=\"Root Servers and IPs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iana.org\/domains\/root\/servers\" target=\"_blank\">this official list<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Update any root servers that are out of date and apply<\/li>\n<li>Done!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are using\u00a0Root Hints in your organisation for DNS lookups, you should probably check your root server IPs to ensure they are up to date&#8230; especially if your DNS servers\/DCs are quite old.
